Ken Unruh, P.Eng., began his electrical career hands-on, as a tradesman in his teens. In 1995 he graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in electrical engineering. Following graduation, Ken worked with Westinghouse between Edmonton and Hamilton, Ontario. Initially as a power system field engineer, and eventually as an electrical machines design engineer. In 1999 Ken joined Magna IV Engineering as a power system engineer and project manager. With a strong understanding of the business and trust building aspects of consulting engineering, Ken later excelled in a client developer role, and by 2008 he had moved into company leadership.
For 8 years Ken Unruh led Magna IV Engineering to a deepened understanding of its professional services model and improved business management, all the while demonstrating Magna's value statement, 'we do what we say'. His tenure saw the company grow significantly; from a single operating region in Edmonton to 10 offices across Canada, the United States and Chile; and, from 80 employees to over 240. Furthermore, Ken was successful in guiding the company to grow its expertise across a wide range of services, without losing its core competency in the electrical discipline, focused on power, control, and lighting systems.
Ken led Magna IV Engineering to establish an advisory board, and worked closely with this group to define a company vision and elect a strategy to carry it out. With the continued growth of Magna’s leadership team, Ken was able to step-aside as CEO in 2016, making way for new leadership to take the company to even greater successes. Ken now holds a position on Magna’s Board where he continues to provide governance and mentorship to Magna's management team. He relishes the opportunity that mentoring and encouraging new leaders brings. This board role allows him the time to pursue additional business interests, while remaining connected to Magna's ongoing evolution.
Ken currently lives in Edmonton with his wife and two daughters.
