We have an exciting opportunity for an Automation Specialist with focus on PLC and HMI systems within our Vancouver Engineering team. The successful candidate can be based out of our Burnaby office. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the successful candidate will be accountable to provide Engineering and Field support primarily on Rockwell ControlLogix PLC and Wonderware HMI systems configuration and graphic design. Experience on other Automation systems such as DeltaV, Honeywell, Foxboro, Modicon, or Siemens would be an asset. This position may involve site rotations based on business and project requirements.


The successful candidate will be responsible for the following areas:

  • Design and implement automation systems for both green field and brown field projects with ability to provide necessary deliverables to upgrade/migrating and expand existing systems
  • Configuration including configuration of control strategies, interpret control narrative and configure control loops consisting of simple, medium complexity and high complexity loops
  • Implement best practices to optimize plant operations
  • Interface with customers to manage client expectations
  • Independently carry out client witnessed acceptance testing for software and hardware
  • Carry out Software Integrated Functional Test
  • Site Acceptance test at customer facility and or mod-yard consisting of testing
  • Loop checks and tuning
  • Third party interface testing
  • Support instrumentation and network team for testing and trouble shooting
  • Integration with management information systems and Plant Event Historian
  • Support sales and proposals team and participate in bid preparation
  • Support customer visits with business development teams to help create new business
  • Provide Superior Client Experiences to assist in maintaining the trusted partner relationship with clients and other business partners
  • Interface with third party products (PLCs, HMIs, OPC Clients, Historians)
  • Develop analysis and reporting capabilities
  • Engineer PLC/HMI Programming to project teams and International clients
  • Complete projects on time, within budget and with exceptional quality
  • Partner with cross functional teams to meet client needs
  • Confidently work with various brands of PLC and HMI equipment
  • Complete technical report writing
  • Interact with clients and colleagues in a courteous and professional manner
  • Develop and implement process improvements to maximize efficiencies and client service
  • Site rotations as required
  • Travel 25-50% of the year based on project requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of Rockwell ControlLogix and other Automation systems
  • Instrumentation Engineering Technologist Diploma or B.Sc. in Systems Engineering, Process or Electrical Engineering (emphasis on Process Control an asset)
  • Experience in process simulation software an asset
  • Demonstrated experience/familiarity with one or all of the following systems would be an asset:
    • DeltaV
    • Honeywell
    • Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley
    • Schneider/Modicon
    • Siemens
    • Wonderware
  • Hands-on experience in Advanced Process Controls in water/wastewater, oil and gas, material handling, forestry or other industries
  • Working knowledge of other makes of DCS, PLCs and SCADA systems will be an asset
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to support Electrical and network design teams in developing the full automation architecture including third party interfacing
  • Strong technical/computer background
  • Skills in data management, analytics and optimization an asset
  • Exceptional communication skills and customer service practices
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities and assignments
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic
  • Advanced planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent time management skills with attention to detail
  • Team player with excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • A positive, “can-do” attitude
  • Willingness to travel; valid Class 5 driver license required
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally
