Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Intermediate Engineer will be accountable for engaging in relationship building activities with clients, identifying opportunities for Magna IV Engineering, and executing projects through sound project management. Specifically focusing on solving problems involving power systems, the successful candidate will assist in developing new business, assist in the planning and execution of projects, provide technical expertise, provide mentorship, coaching, and leadership to team members, and prepare and monitor business processes; ultimately providing exceptional client service through the completion of power systems projects. Sectors served by Magna IV Engineering include power utilities, bulk material handling, pulp and paper, industrial high voltage and medium voltage substations, generation facilities, co-generation units, and others. The primary focus for this Intermediate Consulting Engineer role will be the execution of electrical design including, but not limited to Station and P&C design projects.


Responsibilities of an Intermediate Engineer include aspects of station design and P&C design as follows:

  • Equipment arrangement,
  • Circuit breakers rating, types and arrangements,
  • Disconnect switches rating, types and arrangements,
  • Power cables sizing, rating, arrangements,
  • Cable bus ducts rating and arrangements,
  • Cable trays ratings, arrangements,
  • Grounding grid calculations (GPR, Vs, Vt) – (IEEE Std. 80)
  • Grounding grid design – (IEEE Std. 80)
  • Lightning Studies and design
  • CT sizing and accuracy,
  • VT sizing and accuracy,
  • Power transformers,
  • P&C panel layouts,
  • Single Line Diagrams,
  • AC Schematics (three-line diagrams),
  • DC Schematics (elementary diagrams),
  • Wiring diagrams,
  • Load Flow Studies,
  • Short Circuit Studies,
  • Time-Current Characteristics (TCC) curves,
  • Arc Flash Studies (IEEE Std. 1584),
  • Good understanding of the CAN/CSA C22.1 Canadian Electrical Code,
  • Familiarity with IEEE Standards associated to medium and high voltage equipment (C37 and C57 series)
  • Fair knowledge of at least one engineering software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP or equivalent software tools),
  • Familiarity with microprocessor protective relays (Schweitzer, GE, Schneider, ABB, Siemens)
  • Familiarity with low voltage tripping units (Schneider, Eaton, Cutler-Hammer, etc.)
  • MCC and Motor Control
  • Soft Starters and VFDs
  • Lighting design
  • Control room design for substations
  • Station Battery sizing

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. or B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering degree required from a Canadian university or from an oversees university accredited in Canada,
  • Licenced Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) accredited in British Columbia or can become licenced in BC within 3 months of hiring.
  • 7 to 10 years experience in power system design and power systems studies,
  • Ability to perform engineering feasibility studies,
  • Broad knowledge in industrial, utility and commercial environments,
  • Familiarity with BC Hydro’s type of work and requirements,
  • Familiarity with industrial clients anywhere in British Columbia,
  • Good leadership skills with the ability to engage and motivate team members,
  • Possesses a positive attitude, is highly self-motivated, energetic, passionate and reliable,
  • Proven ability to proactively and effectively communicate with various cross functional stakeholders (automation, civil/structural, mechanical engineers) to achieve operational excellence,
  • Communicate well with clients, contractors, vendors and equipment suppliers,
  • Team player with excellent communication skills both written and verbal,
  • Ability to multi-task, exercise good judgement and prioritize workload through outstanding organizational skills,
  • Dedicated to providing exceptional client experiences to our internal and external clients
  • Proven commitment to safety,
  • Must have a valid BC driver’s license,
  • The ability to travel and work flexible shifts, which include weekends, evenings and statutory holidays,
