A Heartwarming Experience at United Way's Engineering Challenge Day of Caring

The leaves are changing color and it's that time of the year again when Magna gears up for our annual United Way Campaign. Like every year, a variety of fundraising activities are planned by our team to create opportunities for everyone to give back in their own way. Apart from monetary donations, Magna will also be collecting toys, clothing, food, and more.

To kick off this year's campaign, Magna's volunteers participated in the "Engineering Challenge: Day of Caring".

The United Way of the Alberta Capital Region held their annual "Engineering Challenge: Day of Caring" on September 13, 2019, bringing together nearly 70 volunteers from various engineering companies in Alberta. This year's community collaborative project was to enhance the Operation Friendship Seniors Society (OFSS) McCauley Lodge, home to 58 seniors who now have a new deck, gazebo, swing, and garden to enjoy.

Year after year, Magna IV Engineering continues to support the United Way by participating in the annual event, and this time around we had five volunteers: Stuart, Faith, Xiao, Claudia, and Jonathan. The team set off by working on various projects on the OFSS site with the goal of giving a general facelift to the property. Joined by members from 16 other engineering companies, the entire group was able to pull off quite the feat.

A Glimpse at the Day

Excitement was in the air as our volunteers nervously wondered about the type of work they'd be doing for the day. With a brief welcoming ceremony to thank all volunteers, individuals were then split into teams and assigned different projects. Collaborating with the leaders of each team, the volunteers worked away the entire day to ensure they completed the assigned tasks.

It was indeed a rewarding experience knowing that I was able to make an effort to improve the living space of the seniors, and I particularly enjoyed engaging with the curious residents who wanted to see all the work being done. - Claudia C.

"It was indeed a rewarding experience knowing that I was able to make an effort to improve the living space of the seniors, and I particularly enjoyed engaging with the curious residents who wanted to see all the work being done." says Claudia C., who worked on replacing the old fencing around the property. She removed and replaced old rotten boards and posts, measured and cut wood for new posts, screwed them back in place, and painted the fence to look new again.

Getting Down and Dirty

Jonathan was involved with the deck project to start, but ended up shifting to the sidewalk crew later in the day. He assisted in working the sod remover, some shoveling, and pickaxe work to dig out the area. Meanwhile, Faith volunteered to do some gardening…or so she was told. "They said they needed people to do some gardening. I thought we were going to be planting some flowers, but little did I know that we would be building some garden boxes from scratch using concrete slabs and then filling them up with dirt. I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was a heartwarming sight, to see the Seniors at McCauley Lodge watch in amazement as their space changed right before their eyes." said Faith M., and it has indeed been a fulfilling experience for all our volunteers.

What made the event even more special was City Councillor Tim Cartmell proclaiming the day as “Engineering Challenge Day of Caring” on behalf of Mayor Don Iveson in the City of Edmonton. The residents of the Operation Friendship Seniors Society are eager and excited to enjoy their newly improved living space, thanks to the efforts of all the volunteer and organizers.

Magna's 2019 United Way Campaign

Magna is excited to kick off our 2019 United Way Campaign to fundraise and support various charities in the Alberta region. We have some exciting events planned for our team in Edmonton, aimed at increasing awareness of poverty in the capital region. We've collectively raised almost $100,000 in the past five years, and our goal is to keep up the pace through 2019 campaign activities and Magna's corporate match.
