Suncor TRO - Testing and Commissioning

Suncor TRO - Testing and Commissioning

Overview

In 2012, Suncor invested over $1 Billion of infrastructure realignment work to implement the TRO™ process in the Oil Sands operation.  Because tailings management is such a pressing industry-wide challenge, Suncor and six other oil sands companies announced plans in December 2010 to work together in a unified effort to advance tailings management. Each company has pledged to share its existing tailings research and technology and to remove barriers to collaborating on future tailings research and development.

Magna's scope of work included the following components;

  1. Pre-commissioning activities at modular fabricators such as Pyramid, Tarpon and ABB AMD located in Edmonton and Calgary.
  2. Site commissioning and start-up support for all systems including 7.2 kV.  Primary equipment and P&C Testing as well as Pfisterer terminations for Siemens Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS).
  3. Supervision and coordination of subcontractors such as GE and Rockwell for relay upgrades and medium voltage drive commissioning.
