115kV Substation Feasibility Study

Overview

The City of Fountain, Colorado commissioned a feasibility study by Magna to investigate three options and provide a recommendation to extend the useful life and increase capacity of the North Fountain Substation. The three options;

Option 1: Replace transformers T1 & T2 (7.5/9.4 MVA) with larger 10/13.3 MVA units. In addition, replace HV oil circuit breaker 115NF2 with a SF6 breaker.

Option 2: Replace transformer T1 & T2 (7.5/9.4 MVA) transformers with larger 15/20 MVA units. In addition, replace HV oil circuit breaker 115NF2 with a SF6 breaker.

Option 3: Replace transformers T1 & T2 (7.5/9.4 MVA) transformers with a single 30/40 MVA unit. Remove HV oil circuit breaker 115NF2 and serve the single transformer from existing HV SF6 breaker 115NF1.

Technical issues investigated for this study included the electrical, protection, and physical placement of the new units identified in each option.
