Design, Testing & Commissioning, Radomiro Tomić Mine

Overview

Radomiro Tomić is a large copper mine located in the Atacama desert in northern Chile. The mine extracts oxide ore using a leaching process. Although sulfide ore is also available, a different kind of process is required for extraction. Such processing is available at the nearby Chuquicamata mine where production has been falling leading to excess capacity. Therefore a new system was built to crush sulfide ore and transport it via an 8.2 km overland conveyor.

Magna IV Engineering was responsible for the detailed electrical, instrumentation and control system design, along with software development, as well as installation, supervision, and commissioning. Magna provided three complete, tested electrical houses and an operator cabin, including MCCs, VFD drives, PLC cabinets, marshalling panels, and communication panels. In addition to the turnkey electrical houses, Magna provided the field instruments, lighting, low voltage motors and remote I/O panels. We also provided all of the training for the operators.
