Radomiro Tomić is a large copper mine located in the Atacama desert in northern Chile. The mine extracts oxide ore using a leaching process. Although sulfide ore is also available, a different kind of process is required for extraction. Such processing is available at the nearby Chuquicamata mine where production has been falling leading to excess capacity. Therefore a new system was built to crush sulfide ore and transport it via an 8.2 km overland conveyor.
