Refinery Substation Commissioning, Strathcona Refinery Cogeneration Unit

Overview

Imperial Oil's Strathcona refinery, located on the outskirts of Edmonton, Alberta is one of the largest refining facilities in Canada. The facility produces a wide range of petroleum products including gasoline, aviation fuels, diesel, butane, propane, heavy fuel oil and asphalts.

To improve the energy efficiency of the refinery, Imperial Oil is building a cogeneration unit that will produce approximately 41MW of electricity on a yearly basis. Preliminary construction started in December 2017, and the unit is expected to be operational in early 2020. The addition includes a new 13.8kV main electrical substation, and Magna IV Engineering was engaged for commissioning and startup.

  • Site commissioning and start up support for all systems within the new 15kV Switchgear
  • 15kV cable terminations on newly installed cables
  • 15kV cable splicing new cables to existing cables within underground vaults to tie the new system to the existing electrical network on site
