A can-do approach defines everything this firm does
Magna IV Engineering is all about building lasting relationships. “We have a laser-like focus on creating superior client experiences,” says CEO Kelly Butz. “We want to be a longterm partner.” The approach gives Magna IV, which provides engineering and technical field services related to power and automation systems, a competitive edge, and it means the company’s clients always have a wealth of reliable information just a phone call away.
“Clients will reach out to us for support because we know their electrical and control systems better than their own staff do,” says Butz. Many of Magna IV’s client relationships go back decades — some to 1982, when the company was founded. Another key to Magna IV’s success is saying “yes” as much as possible — even if the request is for a service its teams have never performed. “You’re doing it to learn and grow.”
When Butz joined Magna IV in 2004, the company was earning approximately $10 million in annual revenue; that number is closer to $50 million today. Magna IV has gone from having one office to 10, with new locations opening in Western Canada, the U.S. and Chile in the past decade. Further expansion is on the cards, thanks in part to a recent majority investment by a private equity firm. “With this investment, we’re going to be looking at mergers and acquisitions as well,” says Butz.
Recent years have seen the company take a good, hard look at every aspect of its operations with the aim of continuous improvement. The results include an update of Magna IV’s vision statement: “To be the world’s most trusted power and automation solutions provider.” It’s a bold one, but Butz feels it aligns the company’s 275- plus employees with the same goal. “We want our people to think entrepreneurially and look for opportunities,” he says. “So when we’re looking at the services we can offer, we just say ‘Is it power or automation? If so, let’s do it.’”
